The History of Family Trees |
So! Who do you think you are? Humans have always been interested in where they came from. The Bible shows many genealogies of biblical personalities. Many cultures passed their family line orally through the ages; and the nobility of Europe kept detailed family trees.
The current Queen of Denmark claims to be able to trace her linage back to King Gorm who lived around 800AD. The Chinese out do all other cultures in genealogical record keeping. Chinese genealogy records (Jia Pu in Chinese) have been kept for centuries dating back to the Song Dynasty of the 10th century. We hear a lot of stories and tales about our ancestors. Family Line websites let you record them!! The most exciting part would be finding out that your ancestors are famous. Inspired by the medieval art of the Tree of Jesse (used to illustrate Christ’s Genealogy as a prophecy done by Isaiah) the image of the tree was added to the genogram (chart). Made in 1360, the tree was used outside the Bible for the first time, to represent the full family relationships of the classical Gods as featured in Genealogia deorum gentilium. The genealogical method of finding family linage is a well-established ethnographic technique. The early ethnographers developed symbols that covered the issue of kinship, descent, and marriage. It was recognised that studying one’s family links is important in terms of social organization, and played a very important role in understanding the current social relations and reconstruct of history. Through marriage, family lines were important in creating alliances amongst tribes, clans, villages and countries. |
